Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate offers a super unique prerelease experience, with players DRAFTING a 60-card Commander deck, compared to the usual Sealed-format 40-card deck.
Instead of opening up 6 15-card Draft Boosters and building your 40-card deck (known as Sealed), you’ll be picking cards on the fly! Drafting allows you to see cards not just from your own packs, but from other players’ packs too. Here’s how it works:
- You’ll be seated at a table with up to 9 other people – this is known as a “drafting pod,” – and each player will open their pre-release kits, which include 3x 20-card booster packs.
- You and every player at the table will open their first pack, pick 2 cards, and then pass the remainder of that pack’s cards to the player on your left! This repeats with each pack, alternating the direction you pass your cards in, until every card has been drafted.
- Deckbuilding begins! Using the pool of cards you’ve drafted, you’ll assemble a 60-card Commander deck. Once you’ve chosen a Commander, you’ll need to ensure that the cards you choose are within that creature’s colour identity, but in this format the singleton rule no longer applies. That means you’ll be able to draft and play up to four copies of a card that you encounter! (Though statistically this is pretty rare.)
- Play begins! Because this is a multiplayer format, there aren’t any round pairings or standings, so your draft pod will break off into two tables of 3-5 players and you’ll be off to the races.
